Run-Walk-Help: The importance of showing up

What does it mean to show up? Yes, of course, there’s the Woody Allen quote: “Eighty percent of life is showing up.” While he’s a successful guy, Woody Allen is not who I would go to for advice on life and business. Those who arrive with nothing to contribute are better to stay home in my view. The good news is, with the right mindset, everyone has something to contribute.

When I think of showing up, I think of being present. That means paying attention to what is happening around you. It means truly listening to the person you are interacting with. It means keeping your commitments as a volunteer, employee and family member. This requires constant effort. The day any of us stops trying is the day we fail to really show up.

I consistently see energy, ideas, a positive attitude and a willingness to help among our members. Attendees provide our organization with the resolve and resources we need to matter. Not everyone sees this side of the business community.

One tremendously rewarding way the business community helps is through The Main Line Chamber Foundation’s scholarship fund for volunteer emergency medical technicians and firefighters. As we are now in the final weeks leading up to the Sept. 14 Main Line Run, which is the main Foundation fundraiser, I’m asking Chamber members and friends to devote part of their Sunday morning to making a difference in the lives of others as runners of the 5K or walkers of the one-and-a-half mile route through Wayne. Find registration information at

The Main Line Run is only one of the opportunities this Fall for our members to grow, contribute and connect. Find our more at Thanks for your support.
