The help you need now and later

The more than 250 business and academic leaders who gathered for our Regional Congress on Talent and Education on Oct. 30 at Villanova University came away with a clear message – employers and educators must change to meet shared needs.

By 2020, it is estimated that more than 5 million positions nationwide will go unfilled due to the lack of properly trained and skilled workers. Open jobs now are costing companies in forgone revenue opportunities. In the meantime, graduating students face unprecedented debt in a difficult job environment and colleges face pressure over the high cost of education.
Through the proper coordination, these problems can solve each other and The Main Line Chamber of Commerce is playing a central role by placing interns with companies and improving the interaction between employers and colleges. Allied Wire & Cable, Santander, Pep Boys and LiquidHub each had successful internship experiences through a new program being offered under our Talent and Education Network (TEN).

Why shouldn’t the Main Line and Greater Philadelphia, with our abundance of employers and colleges, take on this issue aggressively?

The answer so far is clear – taking on this issue aggressively is exactly what our region needs to do. Working with our partner Campus Philly and sponsors that include Vertex, USLI, Independence Blue Cross, LiquidHub, Safeguard, Lincoln Financial Group, Enterprise Holdings, The Addis Group, USI and Vanguard, that is our plan.

Following the creation this year of the TEN Internship Initiative, which will be scaled up in 2015, we are creating the Talent Pipeline Steering Committee to advise and help execute ideas from the Congress.

Chamber members can help companies, the Chamber and the economy by helping to identify companies that will utilize our internship services. We wouldn’t be able to do any of this without the support of our members. Thank you.
