Wells Fargo partners with Year Up Greater Philadelphia to close the Opportunity Divide.

“My life wouldn’t be where it is today if not for the combined support of the Year Up community and how welcoming my experience was at Wells Fargo,” says Shahrzad Mohammed. “I started my internship with little prospects, and doubt that this would truly help my life turn into something better. Yet, by the end of my internship I had a large network, amazing work experience and a job opportunity waiting for me in San Francisco.” Shahrzad, who recently accepted a communications role at Wells Fargo’s headquarters, is a recent graduate of Year Up Greater Philadelphia.

Year Up is an award-winning, national nonprofit organization whose mission is to close the Opportunity Divide by providing young adults ages 18-24 with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education. The Opportunity Divide is the gap between the 5 million talented young adults in our country who have the motivation to succeed but lack access to the resources and opportunities that enable them to do so, and the 12 million middle-skill jobs that businesses need to fill in order to prosper. 

In partnership with leading U.S. employers, Year Up invests in highly motivated young adults, primarily from low-income communities. Year Up participants complete an intensive year-long program, composed of six months of technical training and professional skills development, followed by a six month internship with a corporate partner. With more than 250 top corporate partners, Year Up works to understand hiring needs and then trains young adults in the specific, in-demand skills companies are looking for.

Nationally, Year Up has served more than 19,500 young adults since its founding in 2000, and will serve more than 4,000 young adults in 2018, across 21 U.S. cities.

Since Year Up Greater Philadelphia launched in 2013, the program has served more than 375 young adults, and will serve more than 120 students in 2018 alone, with the help of corporate partners like Wells Fargo. The Year Up-Wells Fargo partnership began 10 years ago in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has expanded to include Los Angeles, Phoenix, Boston and Philadelphia.

Tom McLaughlin, SVP and Group Technology Executive, has been an enthusiastic champion for the Year Up program. “I have been extremely pleased with the dedication, focus and quality of work from the Year Up interns. I am now sponsoring my third cohort, each having 5 interns. The first cohort was a learning experience for everyone but the outcome was outstanding. Now as we finish cohort number two, we have seen two of those interns transition into internal opportunities. We have also been able to expand the type of work being done, and the feedback from the broader management team that relies on the interns has been stellar.”

Similar to Shahrzad, Chance Gibson will continue with Wells Fargo in Philadelphia as he takes on the role he learned during his internship. “I was able to go back to college, gain true hands-on experience and employment in a corporate environment (Wells Fargo), and build upon many old and new relationships that some I feel will be everlasting. Year Up has given me the opportunity to continue my life journey by providing the means to take the next step. For that, I will be forever grateful.” Shahrzad and Chance are among the 44% of Year Up interns that receive an offer from their internship site and among the 88% of Year Up Greater Philadelphia graduates that are employed and/or enrolled in postsecondary education.
