Honoring winners, heroes and remembering 911

Posted by: Bernie Dagenais on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 3:00:00 pm

Sept. 11 will take on a special meeting for The Main Line Chamber Foundation, our charitable affiliate, this year.  It will be the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 911 – a time when we remember lost Americans and the bravery shown by emergency responders who ran headlong into trouble in a quest to save lives. In some cases, those emergency responders gave their own lives on the fateful day in 2001.

This year, 911 happens to be the date for the Foundation’s Giant Main Line 5k Run/Walk, which raises funds for a scholarship program for volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians at 17 firehouses throughout our region. Last year, sponsors, runners and walkers helped to raise $30,000 in scholarship funds. Just this past June, we provided $41,000 in scholarships to emergency responders at a moving ceremony at the Lower Merion Township Building. These mostly young people sacrifice their personal time to train for and respond to emergencies. They save taxpayer dollars, which would have to be raised, to pay for professional responders if not for these volunteers.

In addition, each year the Foundation helps pay for six local high school students to attend Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week, an experience that teaches them about business and how to succeed in the work world.

This is one of those occasions in which truly everyone can help. We are looking for runners, walkers and race-day volunteers who will be here to help prepare at 7 a.m., corporate teams and corporate sponsors.

Sponsorship opportunities vary from $250 for a table at the expo to a limited number of $3,000 shirt-sleeve logo placement.  The 5kRun/Walk is a great way to associate your company’s name with a powerful cause.

Companies and individuals owe much to these volunteers. Here’s our chance to help out. Find out about sponsorship here. Find out how to sign up, including teams, here.

With your help, we can make The Giant Main Line 5k Run/Walk the most successful ever. Contact intern Carly Genoy at with any questions.
