Beyond Hillary: Celebrating women in leadership

Posted by: Bernie Dagenais on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at 2:00:00 pm

It’s impossible to fully measure the impact Hillary Clinton’s rise to become the first woman major party nominee for President will have on our nation’s gender trends. We don’t know how many 12-year-old girls will think differently about their futures because of her accomplishment. Supporters and non-supporters alike must acknowledge that a milestone has been reached.

We can hope that other long-elusive goals are served by this historic moment. One is adding more women to corporate boards of directors and top-level executive seats in which women are under-represented. According to a 2015 Forum of Executive Women report, women held only 13 percent of board seats and 13 percent of executive seats at the Philadelphia region’s 100 largest companies. Our society misses out by failing to fully engage women leaders.

The Chamber’s Helena Devereux Women in Leadership Award helps lead the way each year by honoring outstanding businesswomen whose personal and professional accomplishments are having a positive impact on Greater Philadelphia and its Main Line region.

This year’s winner is Joan Docktor, the groundbreaking president of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach Realtors. Joan was chosen by a committee of business leaders for her devotion to developing other leaders, as well as her work as vice president of Fox & Roach Charities. The award will be presented at the annual Gold Leaf Celebration on Sept. 29 at The Philadelphia Country Club

Past recipients are Andi Gilbert of Bryn Mawr Hospital, Irene Horstmann Hannan of Citizens Bank, Linda Galante of Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, Donna Allie of Team Clean, Lynn Yeakel of Vision 2020, Sue Schick of UnitedHealthcare and Alba Martinez of Vanguard.

The Gold Leaf Luncheon is expected to draw heavily from our Society of Professional Women, the largest women’s network in Greater Philadelphia. Join us as we seek to inspire men and women to fully develop their leadership capabilities.
