Getting Inspired To Lead

Posted by: Bernie Dagenais on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 2:00:00 pm

The Inspirational Breakfast lived up to its name, and then some, last week thanks to our keynote speaker, entrepreneur and former NFL quarterback Ron Jaworski. Jaws’ energy and guidance made the day for our sold-out, 300-plus attendees in the historic Eisenhower Hall at Valley Forge Military Academy and College.

Coming off the Villanova University basketball win last week and, of course, the Eagles championship in February, seekers of leadership lessons like myself have had a lot to ponder. Eagles Coach Doug Pederson’s focus on connecting with and believing in his players, along with their belief in themselves, is an example for any team building momentum. Villanova Coach Jay Wright, a past speaker at the breakfast, is an outstanding planner and motivator. What a year to live in Greater Philadelphia.
Jaworski, in honor of his NFL jersey number, shared seven so called “no-brainer” keys to success as a leader. They were:

  • You have to like people.
  • Do the little things that make you succeed as a leader.
  • Create an environment where people enjoy coming to work.
  • Bring energy to the workplace.
  • Build relationships by getting to know people through in-person contact.
  • Be sincere, exhibiting integrity in how you handle yourself.
  • Clearly define the goal and trust people to get you there.

As basic as his keys are, they can be elusive for many. In business as in sports, the basics matter greatly. If a leader can’t exhibit energy, care, trust and trustworthiness, outcomes will lag. You need to know where you’re going if you hope to get there. Relationships with employees, customers and peers are so important to success -- and even happiness -- in the workplace.
Jaworski’s seven points dovetail perfectly with the Chamber’s training programs, Leadership Main Line and Leadership Principles & Profiles, for which we are starting to recruit leaders to participate in the next class to be held over four full days in September through November. Contact me at for a written overview of our leadership programs, which include our Women Helping Women Mentoring Circles.

Thanks to Jaws, our presenting sponsors Sabre Systems, Aqua, Firstrust Bank and all our supporters/attendees for helping to make such a memorable Chamber event. As one prominent business leader said, “Jaws was a rock star.”

If I were to add an eighth key to success, it would be to remember to be grateful to those who help to achieve shared goals. Your Chamber team performs admirably in a fast-paced environment, executing valuable programs and events for the benefit of our members.  I can identify specifically how each member of the team lives Jaworski’s keys to success. Our team is happy to play a role in helping you to share these keys with your top players. For that, I am grateful.
